Dr. Benjamin S. Anderson, Jr., age 88, of Cedartown passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2024, after a brief illness.
Dr. Anderson was born on February 23, 1936, in Dothan, AL, but spent his younger years in Fort Valley, GA, where he attended school. His parents were Benjamin S. Anderson, Sr. and Lula M. Anderson, who were both educators in the area of Fort Valley College.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Sandra Anderson.
He is survived by his three children: Kevin Anderson (Laverne), Dr. Carita Anderson Aldridge (Andrew), and Benjamin S. Anderson III; and grandchildren: Richard Aldridge, Kelton Aldridge, Chandler Aldridge, Olivia Anderson, Erin Anderson, Ethan Anderson, and Ian Anderson.
Dr. Anderson attended Fisk College in Nashville, TN, and graduated from Meharry Medical School in Nasville in 1962. After serving a year in St. Louis, MO at Homer Phillips Hospital, he came to Cedartown and established a private practice in Family Medicine, which flourished until he retired in 2020. He had many accomplishments, rewards, and recognitions during his lifetime, but his biggest reward was being appointed by the governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter, to the Board of Human Resources for the state of Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia State Medical Association and served as a staff member and Chief of Staff of Polk Medical Center on many occasions from 1965 to 2020. Dr. Anderson was an avid jogger and could often be seen out and about along his route talking to members of the community and stopping by the hospital to check in with the staff, who always had cold water waiting on him. Dr. Anderson loved his community and seved it well. He will be fondly remembered to many as "DR. BEN."
Arrangements are being handled by the Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Valley, GA.
