Mrs. Juanita Hanson Culp, age 96, passed away on September 23, 2024. Mrs. Culp was born and raised in Cedartown, Georgia, and she was the oldest child of the late J.L. and Nell Hanson. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd A. Culp Sr., and her brothers John, Bobby, and Jimmy Hanson.
She is survived by her children, Lloyd Culp Jr. and his wife Nora, Darryl Culp and his wife Becky, her granddaughter Lauren Gonzalez and her husband Jose, and her great-grandson Damien Gonzalez. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Culp believed in education and work. After completing a business school curriculum, she began working for the Rome Plow Company and played a key role in their production of bulldozer implements that were shipped throughout the American continent. She left the Rome Plow Company in 1967 and decided to embark on a career in elementary education. She enrolled at Shorter College in 1968 and completed her bachelors degree in 1970 by taking course overloads and never taking a semester off. She began teaching third grade at Northside Elementary School in 1970. Mrs. Culp had a true passion for teaching, culminating in her recognition as the “Georgia Economics Teacher of the Year’” in 1987. In 1988, Mrs. Culp left the classroom to assume the role as an assistant superintendent with the Polk School District, a position she held until her retirement in 1998.
In retirement, Mrs. Culp will be remembered for her passion for the “thrill of the hunt” in shopping for bargains, especially clothes. Many of her bargain purchases would ultimately be passed on to family and friends with the price tags still attached. She was a loving mother and wife who will be missed.
Services to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Smith & Miller Funeral Home with inurnment to follow in Polk Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Smith & Miller Funeral Home.
