Lamar Poole

Lamar Duke Poole, a long-time resident of the Rome area, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at the age of eighty-nine.

Born September 7, 1935, in Gordon County, Georgia, to the late John Hunter Poole and Willie Mae Worley Poole Lemons, Lamar graduated from Plainville High School in 1953 where he played basketball and baseball. He married Myrtle Elizabeth Wyatt on March 3, 1956, in Adairsville, Georgia. He worked at Georgia Kraft/ Inland Rome for thirty-seven years, ending his career as Powerhouse Maintenance Supervisor.

He also enjoyed traveling before and after retirement with his wife and friends, making many trips inside the United States and beyond. In his later years, he enjoyed visiting the Smoky Mountains with his faithful companion by his side. He was an active member of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church, having become a member in 1963. He served as head usher, deacon, trustee, 7th and 8th grade Sunday School Class teacher, RA Director, and lay Superintendent of the renovation of the educational building from 1988 until 1990. He was recently awarded Deacon Emeritus for a lifetime of deacon service.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Mrs. Myrtle Elizabeth Wyatt Poole, in 2019. He is also preceded in death by a sister, Doris Harris; three brothers, Clinton Poole, Neil Lemons, and Randy Lemons.

He is survived by a son, Ron Poole and his wife, Susan; two daughters, Pam Agan and her husband, Tim, and Paula White and her husband, Sam; grandchildren, Candice Agan Carlton and her husband, Kyle, Matthew Agan and his wife, Amy, Johnathon White, Steven White, Katie Poole, Brandy Riddle(honorary granddaughter); great-grandchildren, Jacob Carlton, Ella Carlton, Emma Carlton, and Audrey Agan; three brothers, J.T. Poole, Jerry Lemons, and Henry Lemons; and one sister, Linda Battaglia.

Funeral services to honor his life will be held Friday, March 14, 2025, at 4:00 PM, at Shorter Avenue Baptist Church, 1410 Shorter Avenue, Rome, Georgia 30165, with Reverend Jeremy Albright officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. 

Mr. Poole’s family will receive friends Friday, March 14, 2025, from 2:00 PM until the service hour, at Shorter Avenue Baptist Church.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Matthew Agan, Kyle Carlton, Jacob Carlton, Johnathon White, Steven White, Angelo Ferrari, and Chris Dyer. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Men’s Sunday School Class and the deacons of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church.
