Muriel "Murt" Horan

Mrs. Muriel “Murt” Horan, age 89, of Cave Spring passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024.

Mrs. Horan was born in Jamaica, New York February 3, 1935, daughter of the late John Wood and Mathilde Koehler Wood. While her father was serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, the family moved around a lot until they settled in Pleasant Mount, Pennsylvania where she graduated high school and met the father of her children, John Merlyn Stiles in 1951. She later married Gene “Mac” McCulley, moving to Cave Spring for the first time in 1974 when her husband was the Police Chief. Murt enjoyed her time working as a Girl’s House Parent at the Georgia School for the Deaf. In 1980 she opened Murt’s Restaurant until moving to Florida in 1986. Now retired, she and her third husband, Robert “Sarge” Horan moved back to Cave Spring in 2004.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Suzanne Stiles; husband, Robert “Sarge” Horan; stepson, David McCulley, and three sisters.

She is survived by her children, Dennis (Karen) Stiles of Omaha, Nebraska, Jayne O’Brien of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Douglas Stiles of Richland, South Carolina, David (Kay) Stiles of Abilene, Texas, and Mark (Rebecca) Stiles of Wichita, Kansas. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and close friend and caregiver for the past 8 years, Austin Anderson. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. 

Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 2:30 PM in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Cave Spring with Rev. Jarrod Kinsey officiating. Interment will follow in her family lot of Cave Spring Cemetery.

Mrs. Horan’s family will receive friends Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM at First Baptist Church of Cave Spring.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Heath Stiles, Jeremy Stiles, Jeremiah Stiles, Bristol Stiles, Tanner Stiles, and Austin Anderson.
