Nora Matthews Merritt

Mrs. Nora Matthews Merritt, age 83, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023.

Mrs. Merritt was born in Rock Run, Alabama October 11, 1939, daughter of the late Reverend Roy Matthews and Carrie Dempsey Matthews.

Nora was a welcoming person that treated everyone as family. She would always have an open door, especially on Sunday when she would prepare a huge breakfast for everyone to enjoy. She was a long-time office employee of Lindsey Termite before retiring from Cook’s Pest Control.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by son, Ronnie Merritt; brothers, Paul Matthews, Muril Matthews, and Hal Matthews; and sister, Sandra Mauldin; son in Law, Jerry Gurley; great granddaughter, Alliyah Stephens.

Mrs. Merritt is survived by her children, Darlene Gurley, Michael Merritt, Scottie Merritt, and Tammy Pointer and her husband, Jason, and Barry Gibbs; grandchildren, Luke Minter, Matthew Minter (Amber), Cody Merritt (Sarah), Jade Merritt, Caitlin Keller (John), Zach Merritt (Kelsey), Britnee Stephens (Del); great grandchildren, Miles Merritt, Anna Kate Merritt, Jeremy Stephens (Anna), Jackson Stephens; great-great grandchildren Cora Ann and Grady Joe; brothers, Roy Matthews and Arnold Matthews. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other family members that called her “Nanny” also survive.

The family of Mrs. Nora Merritt will receive friends Tuesday evening, August 1, 2023, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Smith & Miller Funeral Home. In keeping with her wishes, Mrs. Merritt will be cremated following the visitation and the family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

The family has requested that flowers please be omitted, and memorial contributions can be made to Victory Baptist Church Food Ministry, 15 Hendrix Rd., Rockmart, GA. 30153
