"Ernie" Canup, Sr.

Mr. Robert Earnest “Ernie” Canup, Sr., age 58, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2024. 

Ernie was born May 12, 1966, in Atlanta, Georgia, a son of the late Bobby Canup and Nell Kennedy Canup. 

Ernie was an avid Alabama football fan. He had many interests including watching NASCAR races, golf, and watching old Western movies. He loved spending time outdoors fishing, and playing video games. He had a deep love for the Christmas season and was referred to as the “Silver Creek Santa.” He was lovingly called “Pops” by his grandchildren who were very special to him. Above all, he loved his family. He was a caring and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His life left a lasting impact on all who knew and loved him. 

In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by brothers: Marty Canup, Keith Canup, and David Canup. 

Ernie is survived by his beloved wife of forty years, Mrs. Kathy Chambers Canup; children: Stacy Saunderson and her husband, Frederick, and Robert Canup, Jr. and his wife, Cristy; six dearly loved grandchildren: Charles Canup, Audrey Canup, Rick Saunderson, Ethan Saunderson, Katie Canup, and Hannah Saunderson; a brother, Eddie Canup; mother in law, Judy Chambers; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Ernie’s family will receive friends Wednesday, December 11, 2024, from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM, at Smith & Miller Funeral Home.
